Mariel

Mariel groaned and snuggled deeper into the warmth surrounding her. A low rumble vibrated through her, and she slowly opened her eyes. Blinking them a few times, she listened to the persistent patter of rain along the roof. Soft gray light flooded through the cabin, and Mariel took a sudden breath.

Holy shit, she had slept with Blane.

Moving her hair out of the way, she realized the warmth she was cuddling was his body, and the rumbling was coming from his chest and soft snores. Her eyes roamed his hard body, snagging on his abs, then gorgeous shoulders, before reaching his face. Goddess above, he truly was a handsome man.

She shifted slowly, extracting herself from his embrace and the warm covers. Her body protested, sore from her toes all the way up to the tips of her ears. She sat at the end of the bed, her neck and back popping as she stretched. Glancing over her shoulder, she saw Blane was still blissfully asleep.

Closing her eyes, Mariel took a deep breath and turned her mind inward, searching until she found the deep well that carried her magic and the mate bond. It had felt stronger, a heaviness weighing on her mind. The bond connecting her to Blane was stronger and brighter, just as she expected. Yet when Mariel turned to her magic, she found it to be the same. No flame, no spark, just snuffed out nothingness.

Fingers caressed down her spine, and Mariel opened her eyes. She glanced over her shoulder, the frown already forming on her lips. Blane’s eyes shone in the dim light, and she took a deep breath before shaking her head slightly. She needed to get out of here, if only for a moment. “I… I need to use the bathroom. I’ll be back,” she stammered and all but flung herself down the stairs.
